Clear Aligners: Who May Be a Candidate and What to Expect

Clear aligners use a planned series of removable trays to move teeth gradually. They can be an appealing option for people who want a less noticeable orthodontic treatment, but they are not appropriate for every bite or alignment problem.

What clear aligners may address

What determines candidacy

A dentist evaluates the teeth, gums, bite, jaw relationship, existing dental work and oral hygiene. Active decay or gum disease may need to be treated first. More complex movements may require another orthodontic approach or a referral.

• Digital scans, photographs and diagnostic records

• A proposed treatment plan and estimated timeline

• A series of aligners worn according to instructions

Daily wear and responsibility

Aligners work only when worn consistently for the prescribed amount of time. They are removed for eating and for brushing and flossing. Patients should clean the trays as directed, avoid exposing them to heat and keep them in a case when they are not being worn.

Important limitations and considerations

• Treatment time varies by case and patient cooperation.

• Attachments or other small auxiliaries may be needed.

• Temporary pressure or tenderness can occur when starting a new tray.

• Lost or poorly fitting trays should be reported rather than forcing treatment forward.

• Retention is necessary to help maintain the result.
