Dental Implant vs. Bridge: Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth
A missing tooth can affect chewing, speech, neighboring teeth and confidence. Two common ways to replace one missing tooth are a dental implant and a fixed dental bridge. The right option depends on the condition of the surrounding teeth, bone support, oral health, timing and personal priorities.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small post placed in the jaw to support a replacement tooth. After the implant integrates with the bone, a custom crown is attached. Treatment generally occurs in stages, and some patients need additional preparation before implant placement.
What is a dental bridge?
A traditional fixed bridge replaces a missing tooth with an artificial tooth supported by crowns on the adjacent teeth. A bridge does not require implant surgery, but the supporting teeth must be prepared and remain healthy enough to carry the restoration.
How the options differ
Support: an implant is supported by the jaw; a traditional bridge is supported by neighboring teeth.
Timing: implant treatment usually requires healing time; a bridge can often be completed sooner.
Effect on nearby teeth: an implant generally does not require shaping adjacent teeth; a traditional bridge usually does.
Cleaning: implants and bridges both require careful daily hygiene, but cleaning methods differ.
Candidacy: gum health, bone, medical history, bite forces and the condition of nearby teeth all matter.
Which option may be appropriate?
An implant may be considered when there is adequate bone and healthy tissue and the patient prefers an independently supported replacement. A bridge may be considered when the adjacent teeth already need crowns, implant surgery is not appropriate, or a different timeline is preferred. An examination and diagnostic images are needed before a recommendation can be made.
Questions to ask during a consultation
What condition are the neighboring teeth in?
Is there enough bone for an implant?
Will preparatory treatment be needed?
How long will treatment take?
How should the restoration be cleaned and maintained?
What parts of treatment may be covered by a PPO plan?
