What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small post placed in the jaw to act as an artificial tooth root. After the surrounding bone heals, the implant may support a custom restoration. The visible replacement tooth is usually a crown, bridge or denture component. Implant treatment is completed in stages and timing varies from patient to patient.
Who May Be a Candidate?
Candidacy depends on more than the location of a missing tooth. The dentist evaluates your gums, available bone, bite, health history, medications, smoking or vaping history and ability to maintain home care. Imaging may be needed. Some patients require preliminary treatment before implant placement, while others may be better served by a bridge or removable option.

The Dental Implant Process
1. Consultation and planning. The dentist reviews your concerns, dental history, examination findings and diagnostic images, then discusses reasonable options.
2. Site preparation. Depending on the condition of the tooth and bone, treatment may include an extraction, grafting or another preparatory step. Not every patient needs these procedures.
3. Implant placement. The implant is placed according to the treatment plan. Healing time varies.
4. Restoration. Once the area is ready, impressions or digital records are used to plan the replacement tooth or teeth.
5. Maintenance. Regular examinations, cleanings and daily home care remain important because implants and the surrounding tissues can develop problems.
Implant-Supported Tooth Replacement Options
Single-tooth replacement: One implant may support a crown without preparing adjacent teeth. Multiple-tooth replacement: Implants may support a bridge when several teeth are missing. Denture support: In selected cases, implants may improve the retention of a removable or fixed prosthesis. The number of implants and type of restoration depend on clinical findings and patient goals.
Implants Compared With Bridges and Dentures
Each option has tradeoffs. A traditional bridge is supported by neighboring teeth and may be completed without implant surgery. A removable denture can replace several teeth and may be more affordable, but it is removed for cleaning and may require adjustments. Implant treatment can provide independent support, yet it generally requires surgery, healing time and adequate bone. The dentist will explain options that fit your situation.
Cost, Insurance and Financing
Dental implant costs vary with the number of teeth being replaced, imaging, extractions, grafting, implant components, restoration design and other clinical factors. Cash patients and most PPO plans are welcome. Insurance coverage varies by plan, and your insurer determines final payment. Financing may be available for qualified patients.
Ask whether a current implant promotion applies to your recommended treatment. Offers, eligibility and exclusions must be confirmed before treatment and cannot be combined unless stated.
Caring for Dental Implants
Brush thoroughly, clean between implant restorations as directed and keep recommended maintenance visits. Contact the practice if you notice swelling, bleeding, a loose component, discomfort when biting or a change in how the restoration feels. Avoid using implant restorations to open packages or bite very hard objects.
