What Does “Same-Day Dentures” Mean?
The phrase usually describes an immediate denture that is delivered on the planned extraction day. Records, impressions or digital scans, treatment planning and laboratory work take place beforehand. The denture is then inserted after the planned extractions if clinical conditions allow. It is a temporary or transitional part of care while tissues heal and change.
Same-day insertion cannot be promised for every patient. Suitability, timing and the number of visits depend on examination findings, health history, the condition of remaining teeth and laboratory planning.
Who May Consider Immediate Dentures?
Immediate dentures may be discussed when several teeth are expected to be removed and a patient wants a planned replacement available during healing. The dentist evaluates the teeth, gums, bone, bite, health history, medications and expectations. Some patients may benefit from a different sequence, a conventional denture made after healing, a partial denture or an implant-supported option.
The Immediate Denture Process
1. Examination and consultation. The dentist reviews your goals, remaining teeth, gum and bone condition, medical history and reasonable alternatives.
2. Records and planning. Impressions or scans, bite records, photographs and shade or tooth-shape selections may be completed. The laboratory uses these records to prepare the denture.
3. Planned extractions and insertion. On the scheduled day, selected teeth are removed and the immediate denture may be placed. Clinical circumstances can require a change in the plan.
4. Early follow-up. The dentist checks pressure areas, bite and healing. Adjustments are common because soreness and swelling change during the first days and weeks.
5. Reline, rebase or replacement. As the gums and bone heal, the denture may loosen. A temporary liner, later reline or a new definitive denture may be recommended.
What to Expect During Healing
Speech, chewing and saliva may feel different at first. Begin with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew slowly on both sides. Follow the dentist’s instructions about when to remove and clean the denture, especially during the first day. Do not adjust the denture yourself or use household repair materials.
Call if you have severe or worsening pain, uncontrolled bleeding, increasing swelling, fever, a denture that cannot be seated, or a sore spot that prevents wear. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for trouble breathing or swallowing or other potentially life-threatening symptoms.
Immediate Dentures Compared With Conventional Dentures
Immediate dentures are prepared before extractions and may be worn during early healing, but fit changes quickly and adjustments are expected. Conventional dentures are made after tissues have had time to heal, allowing records to reflect a more stable shape, but the patient may spend a period without the replacement. The dentist will explain the tradeoffs for your situation.
Implant-Supported Options
In selected cases, dental implants may improve denture retention or support a different type of restoration. Implant candidacy requires a separate evaluation of bone, gums, health history, treatment timing and maintenance needs. Implant treatment is not the same as an immediate removable denture and may involve multiple stages.

Fees vary with the number of extractions, denture type, diagnostic records, laboratory work, follow-up care, liners, relines and other clinical needs. Cash patients and most PPO plans are welcome. Coverage varies and your insurer determines final payment. Financing may be available for qualified patients.

Can I receive dentures in one visit?
Immediate dentures require advance examination, records and laboratory preparation. Delivery may occur on the planned extraction day, but it is not a one-visit walk-in service.
Will an immediate denture fit permanently?
The mouth changes during healing, so adjustments and a liner, reline or later replacement are commonly needed. No fit or result can be guaranteed.
Can I eat normally right away?
Most patients begin with soft foods and gradually progress as comfort and function improve. Follow the dentist’s instructions for your specific procedure.
How soon should I return for an adjustment?
Follow the schedule provided at delivery and call sooner if a sore spot, unstable fit or other concern prevents wear.
